In this month's Nexus we announce the opening of the Round 1, 2016 Conference & Professional Development Grants; apply now!
As usual, we highlight recent publications by TCRN members over the past month, in particular the HSA Biobank publication on institutional biobanking featured in August's publications.
Finally, this month the TCRN has been part of a Biobank campaign to educate people online about how cancer patients can be actively involved in supporting cancer research through consenting to bank their excess tissue samples taken during routine surgery.
Translational Cancer Research Network TCRN Update – Next TCRC Grant & Last Nine Months of Current Grant

We are pleased to announce that the upcoming TCRC grant application to continue funding for another 5 years, will be led by Prof David Goldstein as Director and Prof Mark Harris as Deputy Director.
David and Mark and the other CIs are currently working very hard to prepare the grant application due 2 October 2015.
Should they be successful, the funding for the next round of the TCRN will commence 1 July 2016.
In the meantime we will continue to work on the current TCRN projects until 30 June 2015.
Please be aware that the TCRN will not be offering any new PhD Scholarships or Cancer Challenge of the Year funding. We have committed all our funds but will continue to support current students and projects.

The Power of Biobanking_Promotion The 'Power of Biobanking' - Long-Term Benefits for Future Research

On 7 September the Hunter Cancer Research Alliance, in collaboration with the TCRN and Sydney Vital launched the “Power of Biobanking” campaign; a Cancer Institute NSW BSN initiative.
This campaign aims to educate people online about how cancer patients can be actively involved in supporting cancer research through consenting to bank their excess tissue samples taken during routine surgery.

All TCRN Consumers are research-trained and many of them have experience in reviewing grant applications and research plans.

HSA Biobank crop2 HSA Biobank's Key Numbers

The Health Science Alliance ("HSA") Biobank now has more than 1800 participants who have consented to the use of their biospecimens and/or health data in future research.
The option for patients to consent has also recently commenced at St. George Hospital (General and Private) and Border Medical Oncology located in rural NSW.
