The TCRN is looking for new members for the Consumer Advisory Panel ("CAP"). The CAP provides the TCRN and its cancer researchers and clinicians with advice, guidance and recommendations from a consumer perspective.
If you are an individual who has been affected personally by cancer, either as a patient, survivor, carer, or close family member and have an interest in supporting cancer research, please complete the 'CAP Registration of Interest' form and email it to the TCRN.
The CAP comprises members representing a range of cancer types and consumer experience. CAP members are all volunteers based in Sydney. No previous consumer experience is necessary as training will be provided and travel expenses incurred when on CAP business will be covered by the TCRN.
Membership of the CAP would suit a cancer patient/survivor or carer who can volunteer their time and experience for 3 – 4 events per year plus some additional reading and preparation time. New members will be asked to serve on the panel for a two year period. Some experience in working with committees of any kind is preferable but not essential.
What is a "Consumer"?: Consumers are individuals who are cancer patients or carers including family or friends of cancer patients.
What does being a "consumer" involve?: The TCRN promotes meaningful and sustainable partnerships between consumers and translational cancer researchers from the TCRN membership. The TCRN has established the Consumer Advisory Panel that provides advice and recommendation to the TCRN and its members regarding research plans and directions from consumers’ perspective.
What criteria is needed to become a member of the CAP?: Consumers who 1) are interested in cancer research and consumer engagement; 2) live locally to the Prince of Wales, St George, and Sutherland hospitals, cancer services at the Royal Hospital for Women. Previous consumer experience or research training is desired but not required.
How do I become a CAP member?: Please register your interest by completing the TCRN 'CAP Registration of Interest' form and emailing it to tcrn@unsw.edu.au
Where is the CAP/TCRN located?: The TCRN is based in the Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the Kensington Campus of UNSW Australia.
About the TCRN and the TCRN CAP: The TCRN is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW and comprises the founding institutions of UNSW, the Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick, comprehensive cancer centres at St George and Sutherland hospitals, cancer services at the Royal Hospital for Women, Border Medical Oncology Research Unit, and the University of Technology, Sydney. The TCRN strongly believes that the design and outcomes of research undertaken with consumer involvement will translate more effectively into improved clinical practice and, therefore, better address the needs of people affected by cancer.
